Telephone:  01722 332151
Event:  Salisbury Musick: Salisbury Festival in the 18th Century - Talk by Nigel Wyatt - 3pm - The inaugural Salisbury Musick festival in 2025 takes its inspiration from the annual music festivals of 18th century Salisbury which drew large audiences and featured many of the leading performers of the day. The modern festival is named after the ‘Salisbury Society of Musick’ – the group of local players and singers who formed the core of the festival musicians. Taking the festival of 250 years ago, in October 1775, as a starting point, Nigel Wyatt will discuss the origins of the festivals and those who performed at them. He will explore the factors that led to the success of the annual events and the reasons behind their sudden decline after 1780. As well as enjoying the talk, you can choose to buy an extra voucher for a hot drink and cake in the Museum café for £6. You can use this before or after the talk. Shôn takes us from the empty swimming pool up the hill to behind the woods, introducing us to five-foot Tarzan, Double Delyth and Lord Ivor as we feel the magnetic pull of the river sucking us in. As this made-up town starts to feel more real, Shôn wonders what’s happening to his imagination – it’s running riot. Joyous, stomach-turning, moving and very funny – could this be the best show Shôn has ever made? It could be.

Salisbury Musick: The Leipzig Connection Saturday 04 October 2025
Venue:  St Thomas's Church     map Categories   Live music  •  Music festival
Address:   St Thomas's Square, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 1BA

Event:  Salisbury Musick: The Leipzig Connection - 12.30pm - Sarum Baroque: Miranda Dodd (recorder and baroque violin), Lynn Menzies (baroque violin), Matthew Dodd (baroque bassoon), Hilary Brooks (baroque cello) and Nigel Gardner (chamber organ). Leipzig in the 18th century, being at the confluence of trading routes and host to regular trade and book fairs, was a thriving cosmopolitan city with international connections. The city’s renowned choir school at St. Thomas’ Church and the university attracted students from Saxony and beyond; many musicians who were later to become respected composers received the foundations of their musical training in the city. For Salisbury Musick Sarum Baroque is pleased to present music by composers connected to Leipzig in various ways: Fasch as a student at St. Thomas’ School, Telemann as a university student, Bach as Cantor at St. Thomas’ Church and Handel as a regular visitor to the city. The members of Sarum Baroque met playing Bach Cantatas with Bishop David Stancliffe. Most are familiar to local audiences as regular members of Salisbury Baroque. With both early and late Baroque recorder and string models available they enjoy exploring a wide repertoire aiming at all times for historically informed performances. With a rogue’s gallery of puppets and desperate clowning, Dik’s Quixote embarks on surreal, comic misadventures, accompanied by his wisecracking sidekick, Sancho Panza, and his decrepit horse, Rocinante. While Dik fights to make his retelling of this huge novel joyous to a contemporary audience, we see something else – Dik’s refusal to yield to the passing of time. As Quixote chases his impossible dreams of glory, Dik faces his own dwindling relevance and his mortality. This international co-production from the company that made Coulrophobia, a “truly fabulous showcase of clowning and puppetry skills” (Total Theatre), blends laugh-out-loud moments with mad reflections on the joys and indignities of growing old and fighting against the inevitable.

Salisbury Musick: A Taste of Italy Sunday 05 October 2025
Venue:  Medieval Hall     map Categories   Live music  •  Music festival
Address:   Sarum St. Michael, West Walk, Cathedral Close, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 2EY
Event:  Salisbury Musick: A Taste of Italy - 3pm - Early Bird: Jean Paterson (baroque violin), Stefanie Heichelheim (baroque viola), Sebastian Comberti (baroque cello) and Sharon Gould (harpsichord). 18th century Italy was a hot-bed of musical creativity, inspiring composers throughout Europe. This afternoon's programme is a musical ‘Lasagne’, mostly Italian, but with layers from France and Germany - and a sprinkle of folk-music for seasoning. The four musicians of Early Bird present solos, duos, trios and quartets by Antonio Vivaldi, Anna Bon di Venezia, Tommaso Giordani and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, along with grand desserts by Handel and Bach. Followers of Early Bird will recognise the names of Anna Bon and Elisabeth Jacquet as the creators of unexpectedly popular items performed in recent concerts by the group. In response to requests for more from these two neglected geniuses, Early Bird brings you a Venetian Divertimento and a Parisian Sonata, each featuring the three string instruments and harpsichord. Solo items include Bach's 'Aria variata alla maniera italiana' and fiddle tunes from Calabria, Puglia and Alsace. Outer layers of the lasagne are provided by chamber works from Vivaldi and the four years' Italian resident, Handel. Salisbury Musick's website: www.salisburymusick.org.uk.
