Event:  Salisbury Musick: Salisbury Festival in the 18th Century - Talk by Nigel Wyatt - 3pm - The inaugural Salisbury Musick festival in 2025 takes its inspiration from the annual music festivals of 18th century Salisbury which drew large audiences and featured many of the leading performers of the day. The modern festival is named after the ‘Salisbury Society of Musick’ – the group of local players and singers who formed the core of the festival musicians. Taking the festival of 250 years ago, in October 1775, as a starting point, Nigel Wyatt will discuss the origins of the festivals and those who performed at them. He will explore the factors that led to the success of the annual events and the reasons behind their sudden decline after 1780. As well as enjoying the talk, you can choose to buy an extra voucher for a hot drink and cake in the Museum café for £6. You can use this before or after the talk. Nigel will come to the café as soon as he can after the talk. Salisbury Musick's website: www.salisburymusick.org.uk.

Venue:  Salisbury Arts Centre     map Categories   Talk
Address:   Bedwin Street, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP1 3UT
Telephone:  Box office: 01722 320 333
Event:  An Audience with Jonathan Dimbleby - 7.30pm - Wiltshire Creative welcomes bestselling historian Jonathan Dimbleby with his new book Endgame 1944: How Stalin Won the War. June 1944 saw the greatest defeat ever suffered by the German Armed Forces. More than two million Red Army soldiers, facing 500,000 German adversaries, finally avenged their defeat of three years earlier. While the same month saw the Allies triumph on the beaches of Normandy, it was in fact the events on the Eastern Front in 1944 that were the knockout blow in the Second World War. Dimbleby’s gripping narrative sets the drama of the relationships between Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin against the history being created on the battlefield, and shows how Stalin’s victories in 1944 enabled him to dictate the terms of the postwar settlement and lay the foundations for the Cold War.

Venue:  Salisbury City Hall     map Categories   Film  •  Special interest  •  Talk
Address:   Malthouse Lane, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP2 7TU
Event:  100 YEARS OF LAUREL & HARDY - 7.00pm - Following the success of his 2023/24 tour, Neil Brand invites you to celebrate the centenary of Laurel and Hardy with a brand-new show. In 1926, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy signed separate contracts with Hollywood film mogul Hal Roach, and appeared for the first time in a film together, “45 Minutes from Hollywood”. The following year they would become an official comedy partnership that would set the whole world rocking with laughter. Nobody could have anticipated at the time how this unlikely Anglo/American comedy duo would become global icons in over 130 countries around the world. We are pleased to announce and celebrate those 100 years with the brand new production of Neil Brand’s “Evening with Laurel & Hardy” 2026 Centenary Tour. Neil has established himself as the foremost exponent of silent film and improvised piano accompaniment. Thanks to new restorations of their silent films, and the rediscovery of some of their lesser-known comedies, Neil will uncover gems of hilarity from the team whose comedy never ages, and bring them to jaw-dropping life with the demanding live piano improvisations for which he is so famous. Featuring extended scenes from the best of their silent comedies, particularly You’re Darn Tootin, The Finishing Touch and The Second Hundred Years.
