The Sarum Consort: Palestrina and the End of the Renaissance

Start time: 7.30pm

Palestrina's enormous influence and importance in 16th century music was honoured in 1584 by the composition of Missa Cantantibus organic Caecilia, a remarkable collaboration by seven of Palestrina's colleagues and students. Yet only ten years later the great composer was dead and a seismic shift was underway in sacred music. This fascinating programme demonstrates why Palestrina was so highly regarded, and showcases the innovative new style of sacred music for solo voices and instruments that would ultimately supplant Palestrina's perfection of counterpoint.
