He created The Spring as a pasticcio – a collection of vocal music by a variety of composers, including Handel and Pergolesi, to which he set English words to make a topical story. The opera was first performed at the 1761 Salisbury Festival. The score was held in Cambridge University Library, before being discovered and recreated by Nigel Wyatt. The music for Zimbe! blends African song and jazz in an exciting and joyous blend. Zimbe! will be performed by three Salisbury – based choirs :- Amici, The Coffee Choir, and Downton Community Choir. They will be joined by Downton Children's Choir, directed by Becky Arch. The singers will be accompanied by a professional band including the composer of Zimbe!, Alexander L'Estrange, on piano. The concert will be conducted by Kate Edgar, and profits from the concert will go to support the work of Cancer Research UK. |
