We Will Remember Them

Start time: 3pm

In 1940, the Germans succeeded in destroying the Spitfire factories in Southampton but unknown to them, the British decided to build Spitfires in secret. Salisbury became a major centre for manufacturing Spitfires, hidden in sheds, garages, back gardens, a bus depot and a hotel. With a workforce mainly made up of unskilled young girls, boys, women and a handful of engineers, 2000 Spitfires were built, thus, becoming instrumental in winning the war. The secret was so well kept that even today not many people know about it so, we believe it is time to shine a light on this little known fact and celebrate the achievements of our young men and women who worked so tirelessly for the peace that we enjoy today. The annual Royal British Legion concert, “We Will Remember Them” will pay homage to them and the survivors of our local workforce with a special appearance of the fabulous Spitfire Sisters, who will sing a Glenn Miller tribute to their achievements. The City Hall was built from the Victory Fund surplus raised locally by the good inhabitants of Salisbury and South Wiltshire so it is entirely appropriate that this tribute and concert should be held annually at this poignant venue. The Woodfalls Band returns to thrill you with its unique music and the Service of Remembrance will provide an opportunity for remembrance to include Last Post and Reveille and the show will end with a flag waving opportunity in Land of Hope and Glory.
